SEQUENCES

This is a great archive of filmed art books - collected and well proportioned publications which are clear and graphically challenging. Food for thought as we pace toward the portfolio hand in.

NIGHT SCHOOL

Night School is an artist commission in the form of a temporary school. The yearlong program uses the Museum as a site to engage the public. Seminars, workshops, screenings, and lectures explore thematic components addressed from the perspective of ongoing research and production, and constitute the core structure of the School. Night School draws upon a group of local and international artists, writers, and theorists to conceptualize and conduct the program, including Boris Groys, Martha Rosler, Liam Gillick, Walid Raad and Jalal Toufic, Okwui Enwezor, Hu Fang and Zhang Wei, Paul Chan, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Maria Lind, and Raqs Media Collective. Lectures, screenings, and conversations take place in the New Museum's theater and fifth-floor Museum as Hub space, as well as informal locations throughout the neighborhood.

LED'S

Last Saturday, 4.5 million LEDs lit up the Nabana no Sato theme park of Kuwana, Japan, kicking off their annual Winter Light Show that runs until March 8th. This year's theme is one of flowers, illuminated in 64 billion colors that are reported to change color so quickly that they actually resemble a river more than a field of blooming plants.

REACTIVATE

“The city as a place of play and re-appropriation.” This situationist notion forms the basis for the exhibition “Reactivate!!” curated by Francesca Ferguson with Pepe Ballesteros at the Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló. Until the end of August it will be presenting an international collection of strategies to revitalise urban space.
Reuse of the existing is a central theme, exploiting minimal resources and limited financial means to reach sustainable solutions, at times brilliant, often unexpected, from the driving school on the roof of a building devised by Atelier Bow Wow to modular temporary structures by the French collective EXYZT. Speed and flexibility are the essential ingredients for the situationist city and this also applies to its contemporary interpretation. One example is the urban nomadism proposed with “Permanent Breakfast”, an experiment devised in 1996 by Austrian artist Friedemann Derschmidt. The basic idea is to gather a group of people in a public space to create an improbable picnic. “Delete!” by Christoph Steinbrener and Rainer Dempf addresses public space invaded by advertising. In 2005 the two artists created a spectacular installation covering all advertising billboards, posters, logos, signs and street signs in yellow paper in Neubaugasse, a shopping street in Vienna, creating a disconcerting yet relaxing effect

BATTLESPACES - 26th NOVEMBER

Contemporary political discourse on armed violence and insecurity has been largely shaped by references to spatial knowledge, simulation, and control: "human terrain", "urban clutter", "terrorist sanctuaries", "failed states", "core-periphery". The historical counterpoint to this is to be found in the key role the successive technologies of clock, engine, computer, and network have all played in spatializing the practice of warfare. In this context, what implications do "feral" Third World cities, "rogue" cities organized along non-Western ideas of urban space and infrastructure, and "wild" cities reclaimed by nature, have for the battlespaces of today and tomorrow?
See you at this one - its free and looks good.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Alan Yentob explores the work of artists whose primary medium is light. On his trip down the light fantastic, Alan encounters material from outer space, solid light sculptures, paintings made by the sun and an extinct volcano that has been turned into a temple of perception by the legendary American artist James Turrell.

BUILDING FUTURES WORKSHOP

Unit A participated in this one day workshop led by Building Futures (RIBA) on Architecture and Conflict. At the outset, a catalogue of general questions related to conflict were compiled that became the basis for a discussion about existing site conditions and future potential along the River Thames in central London. In the second stage, smaller working groups visualised scenarios dealing with topics of public/private safety, transport and logistical infrastructures, energy disparity, de-centralised flood defence mechanisms and work-live neighbourhoods.

3D GRAPHIC SPACES

“THREE D – GRAPHIC SPACES” HIGHLIGHTS A CURRENT TREND IN INTERNATIONAL GRAPHIC DESIGN. MORE AND MORE VISUAL DESIGNERS ARE STAGING THREE-DIMENSIONAL SCENARIOS AND TURNING THEM INTO POSTERS, FLYERS, BOOK AND MAGAZINE COVERS, AND ANIMATED FILMS. THE RESULT IS NEW AND EVOCATIVE PICTORIAL WORLDS THAT RANGE FROM PLAYFULLY ARRANGED STILL LIFES TO ROOM-FILLING INSTALLATIONS. COMMON TO THEM ALL IS THE USE OF ANALOGUE DESIGN TECHNIQUES THAT GIVE REAL OBJECTS PRECEDENCE OVER PERFECTLY SIMULATED COMPUTER REPRESENTATIONS.

SENSORY - DAVID LYNCH

Over a lengthy career, Lynch has employed a distinctive and unorthodox approach to narrative film making, which has become instantly recognizable to many audiences and critics worldwide. Lynch's films are known for surreal, nightmarish and dreamlike images and meticulously crafted sound design.

LIDO

The temporary structure received a fillip with the creation of the Southwark Lido, an architectural experiment that occupies a small slice of South London. A collaboration between French architects EXYZT and the film maker Sara Muzio, the Lido landed in Union Street as a riot of beach huts and awnings, strung together with scaffolding poles and a tower that rose up alongside the adjacent railway arches. Commission by the Architecture Foundation, as a pop-up social centre, the Lido functions as both drop-in playspace for local children, party venue for the bright young things following this year’s LFA and, above all, good use of an empty site while the machinations of planning rumble on. The Union Street site is owned by Solid Space, Roger Zogolovitch’s bespoke development company, and the Lido marks a welcome move away from dull hoardings hiding barren sites.
