Teaching methodology

This blog was set up in 2008 and served until 2013 to support teaching-related activities for undergraduate design studio unit A at the school of Architecture at Oxford Brookes.

The unit was lead by Carsten Jungfer for 5 years with support of Colin Priest between 2008-11 and Emu Masuyama in 2012-13. During this time a teaching methodology was developed, that is based around a structured learning framework with inspirational lectures, group workshops, site-visits, field-trips and references to theory and practice supporting students to pursue individual interests by working with open briefs.

The approach to design and learning can be described as site-driven, process-orientated and of multi-scalar nature with an agenda that investigates shifting social, spatial and material conditions in the city. The unit established London as study area for their investigations into urbansim and public realm and the city became testing ground for strategic ideas and architectural interventions. Areas of focus and now under rapid transformation included Old Street roundabout, Mount Pleasant, Aldgate East, Deptford and Blackfriars.

The course also provided hands-on experience and live collaborations with institutions such as RIBA Building Futures Initiative, Design for London, Brandenburg University of Technology, Trada and Eco-build.

Examples of work produced by individual students have been collated into a series of catalogues, that can be viewed online or purchased on-demand at print-cost (see links top right).

Mon 25 & Thu 28 Portfolio Cross Crit

Mon 25 : Y2
Review panel: Melissa Kinnear (unit D) & Emu

Thu 28: Y3
Review panel: Julia Hänsel (Unit E) & Carsten

You are reminded that you have to upload your work to Moodle prior to the crits.

The Cross Crit will be held in form of a table top review. For that we want to see your entire portfolio from sem1 and sem2 up to date and we would like to see it printed in full size (not as A3!!! - this proved too small at the interim) Alternatively - (we are not so keen on this) you can show it via the screens. if you go down that route - make sure you upload before 10.00 and that the single pdf shows without pixellation, etc... you will also need to have site plans, plans and sections printed to scale (1:100) in any case.

Ecobuild 2013 - Plywood Prototypes

Arnold Laver Timber Merchants (our material sponsor) asked us to exhibit one of the eight 1:1 plywood prototypes we produced through means of digital fabrication at their stand at Ecobuild in London (5-7th March 2013)

The team consisting of Maria Damoutzidou, Susanne Stavseng and Ben Ellis write about their designs, that "using plywood as sole material, we were able to create a complex and playful threshold that relied on the behaviour of our material and user interaction to change the immediate and surrounding environments.  We achieved this by controlling the degree of flexibility at certain points throughout the structure by glue-laminating the plywood at varying thicknesses."

Old Street Project Sites

field-trip guide

hello Y2s

I have uploaded and e-mailed you the Indesgin template for the field-trip guide / building documentation we have asked you to prepare. This should be quick excerise and should not take you longer than half day. Scarpa's work is well documented - use the library ! If you find lots of plans, sections and details (always incredible useful when on site) - make more pages, e.g. upt to 4 pages! (scale not important. scale bar would be great) if not one - two pages is minimum.

Please e-mail use the pages or upload (as pdf and packaged CS5 file with all linked images) to the dropbox ( folder 06_field trip) by Friday 4th Jan 2013, so that I can collate this and print copies for each of you.

Alex & Ben - Palazzo Querini Stampalia
Darren - IUAV Entrance
Dylan & Jack - Castellvecchio Museum
