SPEEDS OF TIME

Bill Fontana's Speeds of Time is a real-time sculptural sound map derived from the sounds of Big Ben. A network of microphones starts at the House of Commons from the bell tower itself, spreading out to rooftops and terraces around and beyond Parliament Square. As it does so, Speeds of Time traces the contours of the temporal deformation of the bells. Some of the microphone locations include Westminster Abbey, the Treasury Building and the Horse Guards Clock at Whitehall.

STRING

A series exploring the structures of lived experience and modes of human existence. What can be learned from other people's experience of things we rarely think about? The seventh event in the series focuses on string: tying, knotting, measuring, adorning, playing. What are the origins of the modest string? Does an illlusionist use string the same way a musician does? Does a physicist think of string in similar terms to an artist?

TWILIGHT

This exhibition focuses on eight contemporary artists whose photography and installations are made at, or suggest, the fleeting state of the world at dusk. It explores a time of day and a quality of light that presents technical challenges but also embodies a haunting mood and the possibility of narrative intrigue or psychological tension. At twilight, the colour and quality of light go through rapid and dramatic changes. For photographers, who are highly attuned to the subtleties of light, this is a particularly significant and poignant time. The artists in the exhibition have all made work that focuses on the end of the day and investigates twilight, as distinct from night.

WODICZKO

Wodiczko is most well known for his over 40 large-scale outdoor projections, which have been installed in over a dozen countries. His works are usually socially conscious, and often political in nature. Examples include projections onto buildings of hands or faces of people who speak about personal experiences or crimes they have suffered, allowing the public airing of issues usually kept private.

INTERSPECIES

Can artists work with animals as equals? It has recently been discovered that humans are closer to the higher primates than was previously thought. This exhibition, organised by The Arts Catalyst on the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth brings together a group of artists who actively question the sovereignty of the human species over the all other animal species.

PHYLETIC MUSEUM

The projection consists of five “living paintings” which turned the Phyletic Museum into an architectural canvas. These “tableaux vivants” refer to the accommodated phylogenetic collection which was given to the public by Ernst Haeckel in 1908. Additional inspiration comes from the nearby Institute of Systematic Zoology and Evolutionary Biology, where Seidel used to study and which, for instance, researches the locomotion of animals. All these impressions of color, movement and form are combined with his personal artistic research into intertwining primordial structures, whirring micro-surfaces, traces of smeared motion-fragments, nostalgic optical aberrations, pulsating mirage shadows as well as biographical reflections.

LONDON AT NIGHT FROM THE AIR

"Shooting aerial photography during the daytime had its own difficulties, you are strapped tightly into a harness leaning out of the helicopter, shouting directions through the headsets to the pilot. If shooting in the day can be difficult, night and the lack of light causes its own set of problems, but overcoming them is half the fun and the results can be stunning. I shoot at night using the very latest digital cameras, mounted on either one or two gyro stablazied mounts, depending on the format of the camera and length of lens I'm having to use."

THAMES FESTIVAL

The Mayor’s Thames Festival is a spectacular, free celebration of London and its river. Taking place over the middle weekend in September between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge, the festival brings Londoners together in the very heart of the capital to dance, make sculptures, listen to music, watch movies, drink, eat, enjoy performances, sing, play on the beach, sail on the Thames and dance in the streets.

UNLOCKED

Oxford Castle – Unlocked is thought to be one of the most haunted buildings in the country. Throughout its dark and foreboding history, the Castle has served time as a royal residence, a centre of justice and as the County Gaol. With the help of Fright Nights, the UK’s leading ghost hunting specialists, Ghost Fest sets out to uncover the dark secrets that lie within the grounds of Oxford Castle. Are you brave enough to join them?

THE MAGIC HOUR

The Magic Hour is a six month long project produced by Oxford Contemporary Music in partnership with the Oxford University Botanic Gardens. Artists, scientists and gardeners will work together to explore each other’s worlds and the subject of dusk, twilight or “the magic hour” (as it’s called amongst cameramen and photographers).
The project will culminate in a three night event in early September when you will be able to explore the garden at dusk and during the evening experience magical sounds and impromptu performances.
The artists working on the project are some of the country’s most exciting sound artists and composers. From April to September they will be researching the garden and its plants, building and composing and working with community groups and schools around Oxford as their work progresses.

NIGHT JAM

In early Summer 2006, Scanner invited young people at New Horizon Youth Centre in King's Cross to collaborate on a creative project that expresses how the city at night looks and sounds to their eyes and ears. Through music and voice the group explored the sense of freedom and fear, exhilaration and solitude of the concealing darkness. Between sessions, they captured their nights on camera. NightJam presents two elusive visual and musical journeys through the city’s ‘quiet’ hours.

NIGHT HAUNTS

Commissioned by Artangel Interaction, Night Haunts is a collaboration between writer Sukhdev Sandhu, website designer Ian Budden and sound artist and musician Scanner. Night Haunts unfolds in monthly episodes through 2006 on this specially designed site.
In this contemporary nocturnal journal, Sandhu prospects in the London night with the people who drive its pulse from night cleaners to praying nuns, security guards to the Samaritans. In each episode, Sandhu reflects on the nature of the urban night. Has night life been corroded by light and entertainment? What are the invisible forces that pulse through the sleeping city? Is real darkness possible any more?

UNIT A EVOLUTION

Evolution, concept that embodies the belief that existing animals and plants developed by a process of gradual, continuous change from previously existing forms. This theory, also known as descent with modification, constitutes organic evolution. Inorganic evolution, on the other hand, is concerned with the development of the physical universe from unorganized matter. Organic evolution, as opposed to belief in the special creation of each individual species as an immutable form, conceives of life as having had its beginnings in a simple primordial protoplasmic mass (probably originating in the sea) from which, through the long eras of time, arose all subsequent living forms.
